Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is a source code editor developed by Microsoft and released as open source. Available for Windows, macOS and Linux, it combines the lightness of a text editor with integrated development environment (IDE) features. Core features include: IntelliSense for context-aware code completion, integrated debugging with breakpoints and variable inspection, integrated Git version control, integrated terminal, code refactoring, advanced search and replace, and the extension system which is its strength. The VS Code Marketplace counts thousands of extensions for any language, framework and tool — Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Java, C++, Rust and many others — and for integrations with cloud services, linters, formatters, themes and AI tools like GitHub Copilot. VS Code has dominated the sector since its 2015 release thanks to the combination of lightness, extensible power and multilanguage support. In 2025-2026 Microsoft further integrated Copilot AI features directly into the editor.

VS Code is completely free and open source. There are no premium versions or paid features in the editor itself. GitHub Copilot, the integrated AI assistant, is a separate paid service (from $10 per month). Extensions are almost all free; some third-party premium extensions may have a cost.
